Integration of condition monitoring systems can be quite challenging, as often these systems utilise skill sets that cross engineering disciplines including electrical, IT and communications; and then specialist skills to understand the meaning of the data acquired and then assess it that data is consistent with the expectation of the asset the equipment is monitoring.
Predictive maintenance routines are the desired outcome of condition monitoring. In the simplest forms, basic monitoring of certain events for wayside equipment such as battery voltage or lamp function of railway crossing signals is vital as a part of a safety system. This basic monitoring is effective but as our desire for knowledge and control grows, so does the complexity of monitoring.
