11:50 AM PANEL DISCUSSION: Building Resilient and Reliable Rolling Stock that can Operate After Equipment Malfunctions

Fleet should be able to finish services even in the event of breakdowns by having back-up equipment that enables continued function until it can be repaired. Moreover, when a fault occurs its cause and solution should be easily resolvable through forensic system analysis.
This panel discussion will include:
  • Broad-spectrum user availability for Rolling Stock Engineers
  • Creating back-up functions that can get broken-down Rolling Stock to Depots for repair
  • Improving heat resilience in Rolling Stock to withstand greater temperatures

12:30 PM CASE STUDY: Extending the Life of Adelaide’s Metropolitan Diesel Electric Fleet

In recent years, South Australia’s Department of Planning Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) has invested heavily in revitalising Adelaide’s 130 kilometre heavy rail network. Meanwhile the workhorses of the network, 70 x 1-car Diesel Electric Multiple Units (DEMUs), have received little more than routine maintenance and an internal refurbishment. As these DEMUs approach their intended operational life of 30 years, work has now commenced to enable operation for a further 15 years. This session will look at the work being undertaken to ensure that these assets can be utilised effectively over this period:
  • Car Body Structure: confirm suitability for continuing safe operation
  • Propulsion System: address reliability and obsolescence issues by replacing the heart of the vehicle with a modern equivalent
  • Overhauls and Upgrades: continue to meet performance objectives by renewing bogies, HVAC, event recorders and passenger environment
